Why Your Business Needs Fiber

Jill Plouffe Fiber-optic Facts, Fiber-optics 101, Fiber-optics Project Management Team, Legacy Copper Phone Lines

Today’s business needs speed. Businesses of all types are using more bandwidth and looking for faster connection speeds to support their employees and customers. Here are just a few reasons your business needs fiber internet.

Fiber provides higher speeds for the modern requirements of an office.  As we utilize more cloud services, more video and more data, in essence, more of everything that is delivered over the Internet… we need higher bandwidth.  Fiber provides that volume and speed at comparable prices to the traditional copper delivery systems like T1 and DSL.

One big advantage of fiber is that there is much less degradation of the signal over distance.  DSL depends heavily on being within a mile of the main office of the service provider.  Fiber does not have those restrictions.  Fiber signals can travel much further without amplification too.

Electronic interference is also much less with fiber.  Copper lines transmit electricity which is subject to magnetic and other types of interference, while Fiber, which utilizes light to transmit data, is not.  One of the first commercial installations of fiber was in 1975, “the United States Government decided to link the computers in the NORAD headquarters at Cheyenne Mountain using fiber optics to reduce interference,” according to an article by Mary Bellis in About.com.

How much faster is Fiber than traditional copper wire?  It is as much as 10 times faster.  A fiber the width of a human hair can transmit as much data as several copper wires.  Researches in Florida have developed a new fiber optics cable capable of transmitting the contents of over 5,000 DVDs in a single second, a speed 6 times faster than the previous record. (Gizmodo Magazine “Breaking the speed record: Multi-core optical fibers achieve 255 Tbps” – November3, 2014).  Clearly there are new innovations yet to come, but the technology of Fiber Optic Cable and Communication is a solid foundation that will allow companies the bandwidth they need.
